Reading & discussion with Mahmoud Muna and Matthew Teller, editors of Daybreak in Gaza (Saqi Books) at Curious Fox books, Berlin.
‘A love letter to Gaza. A heartbreaking testament to the beauty and courage of Palestinian people in the face of extraordinary brutality.’— Isabella Hammad‘A most significant collection, one that frightens, awes and inspires, the timeliest of reminders of our common humanity and the irrepressible force of the written word.’— Philippe Sands
About the Book: This was Gaza. A place of humanity and creativity, rich in culture and industry. A place now pulverised and devastated, its entire population displaced by a seemingly endless onslaught.Today, as its heritage is being destroyed, Gaza’s survivors preserve their culture through literature, music, stories and memories. Daybreak in Gaza: Stories of Palestinian Lives and Culture is a record of that heritage, revealing an extraordinary place and people. Vignettes of artists, acrobats, doctors, students, shopkeepers and teachers across the generations offer stories of love, life, loss and survival. They display the wealth of Gaza’s cultural landscape and the breadth of its history. This remarkable book humanises the people dismissed as mere statistics and portrays lives full of joy and meaning. Daybreak in Gaza stands as a mark of resistance to the destruction, and as a testament to the people of Gaza.
About the Editors:Mahmoud Muna is a writer, publisher and bookseller from Jerusalem, Palestine. He runs Jerusalem’s celebrated Educational Bookshop and the Bookshop at the American Colony Hotel, both centres of the city’s literary scene. Muna writes regularly on culture and politics, with bylines in the London Review of Books and Jerusalem Quarterly, among others. He recently published the first-ever Arabic edition of Granta magazine.
Matthew Teller is a UK-based author and broadcaster writing on place and culture, with a special focus on Palestine and the wider Middle East. His 2022 book Nine Quarters of Jerusalem: A New Biography of the Old City was a Daily Telegraph Book of the Year. Teller produces and presents documentaries for BBC Radio 4 and World Service, and reports for BBC Radio’s ‘From Our Own Correspondent’. His journalism is published by the BBC, Guardian, Independent, Times and Financial Times, among others. Teller is the author of Quite Alone: Journalism from the Middle East 2008–2019 and several travel guides, including the Rough Guide to Jordan.Recorded 01.11.24Edit : Adrian Shephard.www.radio-on-berlin.com

Our heroes of Berlin's tour-guide history, Rinus Van Alebeek & Jason Honea take us to Bebelplatz, a cornucopia of campaigns, arts and education.
'The Bebelplatz in Berlin was built as an expression of Frederick the Great's, Prussian vision: Love for the arts, the importance of knowledge and tolerance took form in these beautiful buildings. The palace of his brother Henry became a university after his death and thus added another virtue to the Bebelplatz: the freedom of choosing your future along the lines of study. But then, centuries later, there was Hitler.' - Rinus Van Alebeek.

'Had the distinct pleasure this afternoon to talk to Dave Pollack from Destiny music agency and records at length. Though we both hail from the Bay Area/ SFCA punk wars and have brushed elbows on many occasions here in town it was great to really cut him loose and let him tell, tell, tell all. What was supposed to only be a ten minute exchange turned into a 1.5 hour long walk, shuffle and protracted chat beginning with our childhood days in different parts of San Francisco and ultimately our migration over here . Berlin then and now stuff, spaces and places. Tune into Radio On ! Berlin and tuck your ears!' - Jason Honea.

Tape review special with Anton aka Wassily Bosch and Marcin Barski with a plethora of tapes and limited edition vinyl on the decks.
Marcin Barski from Krakòw and long time Radio On radiomaker Wassily Bosch came to visit the studio on a mid-winter Sunday. Wassily runs Nazlo Records. His visit to Berlin resulted in picking up a load of cassettes and vinyls that his label released over the years. We played them all and through sounds and stories we got an insight in one particular eastern european niche of underground culture. Add to this the walkabouts of Marcin and you get a radio show custom made for an all inclusive listening experience.

It first met at the parish church of St. Thomas, Crookes before moving to larger premises in Sheffield. NOS was hailed by the Church of England as a model for rejuvenating the church and bringing young people to the faith. Articles appeared in the national press commending the group on its innovative style of worship. It collapsed after a sex scandal alleging the abuse of at least 40 women by its leader, and was later accused of promoting hedonistic paganism in place of orthodox Christianity.Track listingNarration: Extracts from ‘The Nine O’Clock Service: An Exercise in Power and Control’ by Sheffield Patrol GroupExcerpts from ‘Planetary Mess’ by Apostates1. Programme description:
THE WHEEL AND THE AXLE
Have you ever wondered if Elton John sold his soul to the devil for the sake of a polyurethane wig in the same deal that saw the genius Sting (Ein-Sting-Stein) equipped with the skills to engage in 8-hour Tantric bunk-ups?
Have you ever longed to hear decent versions of ‘John Barleycorn’ and ‘Thomas Rymer’ that do justice to the ancient texts (Satchmo style)?
Then why not feast your ears on THE WHEEL AND THE AXLE, brought to you live (or undead) from the New Jerusalem of Northern England by Sheffield Patrol Group?
And there are also many other things to be heard on THE WHEEL AND THE AXLE, the which, if they should be heard every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the audio files that should be generated.
So be it.

Radio-On-Berlin - Marty Segal - A Spy for God
Friday Jul 28, 2023
Friday Jul 28, 2023
“…a man who lived his life with a ferocious veracity… an inspiring and impossible to describe genius who never gave up or sold himself out. He passed away suddenly, December 2003. This piece was from Marty’s weekend experience in a British hospital as he recounts his detailed analysis and relationships with staff, patients and all with his unique charm and witty intellect.
Professor of Mathematics & Dr of Social Psychology from the Einstein School in New York, Marty Segal was the Jewish son of a Rabbi living in 60's America when everything was deemed possible. He went on to teach at the Sorbonne in Paris and I met him in the last 15 years of his life in Brighton in the UK. He was a writer and performer and incredible speaker able to entertain anybody with his quick wit, humour and educated deep insight into almost any subject. He recorded interviews with many people with his Sony Professional cassette machine and he recounted this personal weekend as a tape diary to his fellow writer John Heart when he was admitted to a British National Health Service (NHS) hospital in Brighton for Pneumonia. It's both a tour de force critique of the hospital system and a credit to those who work there. - Adrian Shephard.www.radio-on-berlin.com

Streit Kultur#4 - FELD Theater : Kopernikus Oberschule, Steglitz Berlin.Juni 2023.
English:
Our show, 'Mehr Mitmischen' or 'taking part', 'being involved', 'making a stand' and 'having a voice', is a result of a series of workshops we conducted since the beginning of march with high school students at the KoperniKus Oberschule in Stieglitz, Berlin supported by StreitKultur and FELD Theater.
They shared their worries and thoughts, put forward their opinions, took a stand regarding issues about the future and climate change, told us about their religious and cultural backgrounds while their voices said no to racism, mobbing and sexism..through these workshops that culminated into the show and while they started shy and self-conscious, they became brave, funny, enthusiastic, focused and involved with themselves and the environment around them...through discussions, interviews, laughter, singing and poems they shed layers of indifference and distance to grow into a united school community , full of respect and honesty to become humble radio stars....tune in to find out how!. Your true radio gurus, Gaby and Adrian..
with thanks to all at StreitKultur and FELD theater, the students and teachers for an unforgettable experience !

Radio-On-Berlin - Patti Smith - Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin 160423
Saturday May 20, 2023
Saturday May 20, 2023
Thanks to Mustafa we managed to get the very last tickets to see the legendary punk poetess Patti Smith here in Berlin at the Neue Nationalgalerie. Though tickets really made very little difference in the end as so many people had turned up there was literally no space between those with tickets and none. An incredibly intimate (despite so much audience). performance from Patti Smith showing her absolute humanness and sensitivity keeping her fire alive. Still as relevant now as she was in the historical times she lived through - an epic concert.Recorded & edited : Adrian Shephardwww.radio-on-berlin.com

The interview was made in 2002 in a squat on the seafront for radio4a a pirate station (yup real pirate radio !) – I met Ralph firstly through the occulture agency – which had an office above the Brighton cinematheque which I co-managed in the media centre. Occulture founded by Jonathan Tapsell was an occult office (literally) who had many incredible people on their books with a festival and regular events – wonderful people in one building ! Ralph was a unique true and honest gentleman (Thanks Jon !) and in this interview, Ralph is asked about death – he responds he had ‘no fear’ and that death was ‘the final adventure’…” - Adrian Shephard.
Ralph Harvey, Count Sir Ralph de Straet von Kollman, was a well known UK occultist and author, with best selling titles such as ‘The last Bastion’, and ‘The Mystical and Magical World of Faerie’. He has written numerous scripts and screenplays, the latest of which, ‘The Spy in the Eagles Nest’ is in pre-production with Imperial Film Productions, the book of which is to be published by Lilith Mandrake Books in 2017. Currently he has over 20 books in print and this year he completed a new TV series entitled Wiccan Ways.He was regularly invited to give lectures on witchcraft, magic and faeries and was the founder of his own movement, The Order of Artemis, and has established over 100 covens in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany and Switzerland as well as the UK.
“To Ralph Harvey, Wiccan elder, the worlds leading pagan Exorcist and the go-to man for all indigenous tribes around the world who entrusted him with their histories, their artefacts and traditions. Keeper of the Maori Kara-Kura sacred gemstone, and one of the only white men to been inducted into the inner Hopi rites. Ralph opened every single Occulture festival not as a compere but to invoke the Gods and Goddesses of his faith and reach out to members of all beliefs to unite in peace.Ralph was asked to become the King of the Witches but stated that such a title did not exist in his faith and yet, unbeknown to many he was actually a European aristocrat holding the title Count. He married Audrey who herself was of ancient Witch bloodstock being part of the Kemp family of Brighton. Together the couple presided over 200 covens worldwide.
To Ralph Harvey … a gentleman Witch who will now join the land of Old Gods.”

On the occasion of the screening in Berlin of the documentary Punk the Capital James June Schneider visited our studio, where he was introduced to Jason Honea. James’ movie covered the east coast punk scene. Jason was actively involved in the west coast punk movement. Both guests share an enormous knowledge of persons, bands and anecdotes.
Hear about yippies, Reagan, GI’s, obscure basements, bad brains, cramps, germs, death club, skaters and how to deal with a vast archive of super8 and VHS-footage and bring it together in a documentary.

On the 14.2.23 I had the pleasure to interview the sound artist Michael Northam currently recuperating from surgery in a ramshackle jungle hut in the humid temperatures of Kerala, southern India. During the show he plays tracks from his exclusive latest release 'It is just a name' and talks about the 'hidden kingdom' where he was conducting sound workshops during the months before. Radio-On-Ukraine with Dmytro Fedorenko Part 2
Wednesday Jan 25, 2023
Wednesday Jan 25, 2023
Radio On’s friendship with Dmytro started in the winter of 2013-2014. In a weekly series of skype broadcasts with him directly from the Maidan uprising. Those events turned out to be decisive in the further development of Ukraine as an independent state. Russia didn’t agree with the new government. The war in Donbass, the annexation of Crimea were small steps towards the massive invasion we witness now.
Dmytro came to our studio to talk about all this, and give some insights from the Ukrainian point of view.
In our second epic conversation the Berlin situation is discussed and described. Out of seemingly nowhere a massive organisation is set up to gather resources, modes of transport and help for refugees that arrive in Berlin as well as for all those who are in Ukraine. Dmytro talks about his experiences. Adrian describes the situation at the Hauptbahnhof. Our own Field Recordings from the demonstrations in Berlin are played.
Professor Hu Wei wrote Possible Outcomes of the Russo-Ukrainian War and China’s Choice. Some points he made were discussed.
Dmytro plays tracks from CDs by Pan-sonic (Oksastus), Zavoloka (Promeni) and Muslimgauze (Eleven Minarets), all released by his former Ukrainian label Kvitnu.Recorded : 15.3.2022www.radio-on-berlin.com

About Us
Adrian & Rinus host Radio-On-Berlin.com. Based in legendary Kreuzberg & broadcasting 24/7 since 2013.
Radio On presents an insight into the current situation of the ultra-margins of contemporary music and non-institutional artistic developments.
The Culture Trip lists Radio On as one of the ten radio stations in Berlin you need to listen to.
Lo-fi radio for lo-fi people !
History:
Radio On was founded in 2006 in a former east German light bulb factory and Stasi lookout post over the Spree in Berlin. The first broadcast was recorded in Adrian Shephard's studio together with Rinus van Alebeek. The program was transmitted by Resonance FM in London as a part of the Framework-afield series.
We continued to play strange music and even more bizarre dialogues. Programmes were scheduled and transmitted irregularly via a covert server in the heart of Amsterdam. For years to come we were the only pirate station on the internet, funded by the Dutch Crown.
We made programs for other stations such as the radia network, but also for the oldest internet station dfm.nu; H.A.K. and cannibal caniche in France and radio zero's radiophonic festival in Lisbon.
A quantum leap in Radio On's existence was possible thanks to the help of sourcefabric. We were offered the free use of their software (a virtual radio station) and their Airtime server. This has made it possible to re-schedule programs from our vast archive and to be on air for 24 hours.
